Friendly reminder that in the English language, all Kingdom Hearts characters take the apostrophe s (’s) when showing possession (yes, even Roxas, Ventus, and Eraqus). (◕‿◕✿)

actually, roxas, ventus and eraquas would just have an apostrophe after their name, for…

Actually that’s a common misconception as a possession apostrophe without the extra s (cats’ dogs’ etc.) after an s is used to show plurals (multiple things owning something).
It is the preferred method that if a singular word ends in an s and you are trying to show procession that you use the extra s (though it is not required)
Plus you wouldn’t say Roxas’ keybalde, you would say Roxas’s keyblade.
If you want proof I can reblog with a link (on phone right now).

Though that plurals rule is a common misconception, so is the one I am describing. I didn’t word it particularly well, in that I didn’t specify that its only with proper nouns that it applies, sorry (as the capital letter shows that it is proper noun and therefore will not be plural). The exception (in general) is if it is a singular noun ending in double S (such as princess) then ‘s is acceptable.
At least that’s the way with british English, if its American English youre describing then youre definitely right, just another unnecessary and confusing difference they made:P

Yup using American English. And yeah two cultures separate by a common language is a stupidly accurate phrase.
Also it makes sense to talk about American English for Kingdom Hearts because it is translated in America.

I’m going to make one small complaint as someone with a name that ends in ‘s’ and is also a linguistics major. You can use either. Everyone will understand what you mean. Personally I think it looks stupid adding an extra s after my name, so I simply use an apostrophe.

Edit: this can be a case of prescriptive language versus descriptive language, since within the field of linguistics what people actually use (which I most often see as just an apostrophe regardless of whether it is plural or not) is more important than any grammar rules in any context.

Yup, I remember that from when in introductory linguistics they were teaching us how to write English words in IPA format. Really fun class and very interesting.

According to Grammarbook.com, it is PREFERRED to use ‘s after words ending with s (like Roxas’s) however the second s is not required.

Oxford states that you at the extra S in possession if you SAY the extra S (like Thomas’s book). This excludes locations and businesses (which you should look at the website). If you do not say the extra S when showing possession you simply add the ‘.

I think usually English KH says the extra S, that is the official possessive format for Kingdom Hearts.

The first part is a reiteration of what I already said, preferred not required.
Also the second one doesn’t hold much weight as the English written system isn’t always the best at reflecting what is actually said. Like read read read or knight and night or the word you. Part of this is a ton of mixing with the French language amongst other languages another part is the writing system hasn’t evolved and change as quickly as the spoken one. Maybe at one point the k in knight was pronounced, maybe all the letters in you were also pronounced. Maybe read read we’re all said the same exact way at one point. We can guess but no one knows for sure.

Friendly reminder that Japanese doesn’t have plurals in the same way English does (the closest they have is tachi which is used for pronouns and groups of living things and is not as widespread as s or es is in English) (◕‿◕✿)
